Samuel Gruber is the Hungarian elderly owner of an antique shop on Portobello Road and Paddington's best friend, whom he calls "Mr. Brown". He usually takes Paddington and the Browns to outings. He has taken Paddington to places such as the Tour De France and Japan.

He is currently writing a book called "The World and its Wonders" which explains why he takes Paddington around the world. Paddington helped him by finding interesting things in France.

In the films, Mr. Gruber is portrayed by Jim Broadbent.

Personality[]

Mr. Gruber is friendly, knowledgeable, and well-travelled. In the second segments of episodes, he and Paddington go on expeditions together around the world.

Mr. Gruber usually has a bun and a cup of cocoa in the morning for what he calls his 'elevenses', during which he enjoy chatting with Paddington. He usually calls Paddington 'Mr. Brown', which makes Paddington feel very important. 

Abilities[]

  • Antiques: Since Mr. Gruber runs an antique store, he is good at acquiring, pricing and selling antiques.
  • Painting: It is one of Mr. Gruber's favourite subjects, and he is quite knowledgeable about art history and artistic techniques.
