Synopsis[]

Paddington and Mr. Gruber are on a cruise and unknown to Paddington his adopted parents and Mrs. Bird are secretly on board as well. When he first sees them, Paddington believes them to be a mirage.

Summary[]

Paddington rests on a cruise, as he and Mr. Gruber are on it. A cruise man comes up telling about a sweep for Paddington, which Paddington thinks is a literal sweep but in reality, it is a contest. One has to guess how many miles the ship travels by midday, and close to the answer wins. Paddington smells the wind to predict the weather, and guesses 25 nautical miles as he can sniff bad weather.

Paddington figures, he made a wrong guess by mistake, but Mr. Gruber tells him not to feel bad. Paddington snacks on some biscuits and marmalade, until the hot sun makes him sleepy. He dreams that his biscuits enlarge and he hears Mrs. Brown's voice and others, and soon wakes up. But, when he sees The Browns, he believes he is still dreaming and sees their ghosts. Paddington hurries to the ship doctor. He tells the doctor that he was chased by biscuits and he saw The Browns despite them being in London. The doctor says that the sun is just making him imagine these things.

The Browns appear by the window, so he runs off again. The "ghosts" are the real Browns. They came onboard to surprise Paddington when the ship stopped for supplies. They find Paddington's hat near the railing and the cruise stops when they believe that Paddington went overboard. However, he is hiding under a covered boat. Paddington sees The Browns and gets spooked, but he finds out that they aren't ghosts. And when the captain says that they have traveled 20 nautical miles, Paddington unexpectably wins the sweep. Mrs. Bird comments that Paddington will have a good sleep after lunch after this moment, but he figures he'll stay up for the rest of the day.
